San Cosme Artesano V Mezcal
San Cosme Artesano V is crafted from 100% Cuishe agave, a tall, narrow variety grown at high altitude in Oaxaca’s Sierra Sur region. Requiring 10–15 years to reach full maturity, this rare agave produces a mezcal of remarkable intensity and character. Traditionally roasted in earthen pits and double distilled in copper stills, the result is a pure, complex spirit that rewards patience.
Production and Craftsmanship
San Cosme Artesano V follows time-honoured mezcal traditions.
After careful harvesting, the agave hearts are slow-roasted in conical earthen pits to develop depth and smokiness. Natural fermentation preserves the character of the Cuishe agave before double distillation in copper stills refines the spirit into a bold yet elegant expression.

Serving and Pairing
San Cosme Artesano V is best enjoyed neat at room temperature in a nosing glass to appreciate its aromatic complexity. It pairs beautifully with dark chocolate, grilled pineapple, or traditional Oaxacan mole. In cocktails such as a Mezcal Negroni, its bold profile balances citrus and bitters with precision.
Presentation and Design
The 500ml bottle reflects the mezcal’s refined minimalism. Clear glass and bold black typography on a white label express confidence and authenticity. The phrase “Hecho en México” proudly honours its roots. Each bottle is part of a limited single batch, reinforcing its rarity.
Heritage and Origins
San Cosme Mezcal was founded in 2011 by lifelong friends Erik Lozano, José Julián Carrera, and Gernot Allnoch. They set out to share Oaxaca’s ancient mezcal tradition globally. At the time, mezcal was barely known outside Mexico. Their bold launch at Bar Convent Berlin sparked worldwide interest, leading to distribution in 32 countries.
The brand’s name honours Saint Cosmas, the patron saint of doctors. Alongside his twin brother, Saint Damian, he is recognised as the patron of pharmacists. In ancient times, mezcal was used as a healing remedy in Oaxacan communities. Legends say Saint Cosmas appeared in dreams, curing those who prayed for his help. The makers of this mezcal have sought to honour this fine saint with a bold spirit.
The Artesano series celebrates rare, wild agaves, such as Ensamble, Tobalá, and Tepeztate, with each bottle reflecting Oaxaca’s vibrant indigenous culture.
A Distinctive Expression
San Cosme Artesano V represents the next evolution in the Artesano series. While Artesano IV earned Double Gold at the 2023 IWSC, Artesano V distinguishes itself through its bold 51% ABV and rare Cuishe agave profile.
Its complexity and artisanal production mark it as a standout expression for collectors and connoisseurs alike.
