The flower symbols signify an ancient god called the Fifth Sun, the creator of all life. The hummingbirds on the hand painted wooden cap had a mystical role in ancient Mexico. The small birds were seen as the messengers of the gods and their image was worn as talismans by the Aztecs. The hummingbirds are also major pollinators of the flowers of Guerrero.
